From U-Save’s inception, we have been dedicated to the franchise method of doing business. By linking U-Save Support Center experience with the energies and entrepreneurial drive of hundreds of independent business owners, U-Save has built an international franchise organization.
Founded in 1979, U-Save Auto Rental rents cars, vans, and light-duty trucks to neighborhood customers, local businesses, and people in need of temporary replacement vehicles. U-Save also services commercial and government travelers at selected off-airport locations. Today, the U-Save system has more than 400 locations and is growing dramatically.
In 1994, with partner Christy Stephens, Tom McDonnell bought a U-Save franchise in Jackson, MS. In just over two years, that operation has grown from 12 to 200 vehicles and generates $2 million a year in revenue. At a national franchisee convention in February 1996, McDonnell learned that an unsolicited offer had been made to purchase the company. That offer was declined, but it prompted McDonnell to make an offer of his own. The sale to McDonnell and Joseph F. Tatum, Jr. was completed in November 1996.
Early in 1997, McDonnell traveled to seven cities to meet with franchisees from across the nation. The trip confirmed what had attracted him to U-Save in the first place – the strength of the franchisees. “We have a core group of solid business people who want to grow.
