Bright & Fruitful Future
Americans love fresh fruit. And their love for it is growing. In 1999, Americans, on average, consumed a whopping 102.4 pounds of fresh fruit per person, the third highest level in two decades.1 It’s part of a trend that has seen per capita fruit consumption in the U.S. increase a staggering 26% since 1980.2 Among the more popular fresh fruits consumed are grapes, strawberries and pineapples, all ranking in the top ten.
What’s fueling the demand for fresh fruit? In part, it’s the convergence of two strong consumer trends: eating healthy and the desire for fresh produce.4 Today’s consumers understand that fruits and vegetables are the healthiest foods for them, and they are increasingly demanding that these products be fresh.5 And the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) says consumers will increase their reliance on fruits and vegetables in the near future, reflecting the newfound prominence these foods are enjoying in public health policy.6 That policy includes guidelines issued by organizations such as the AICR, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Cancer Institute and the American Heart Association.
And the future also looks bright for the specialty food store and gift-giving industries. Specialty food stores constitute an $11 billion industry in the U.S., with more than 22,000 businesses and nearly 120,000 employees.
America’s gift-giving industry is enormous, generating more than $55 billion in retail sales.9 And, in a recent study of companies reporting a holiday gift-giving program, Hewitt Associates found that 23% reward employees with an edible gift .
All of the above is great news for us at Edible Arrangements. And it can be great news for you, too, as an Edible Arrangements franchise owner!
